Your perfect swimwear

It’s time to start thinking about your summer break and for many that will be a beach holiday.  With that in mind it seems the perfect time to offer some advice on finding your perfect swimwear.  For me the days of wearing a skimpy bikini are far behind me, so I’m delighted that there are so many more options these days for those of us who want to cover up our midriff.  Many of you will continue to opt for a bikini to ensure you get a great tan (taking the appropriate precautions to stay safe in the sun of course), and to show off the hard work you’ve put in to keep your body looking ‘beach ready’.

No matter what your shape and size, there is something available for everyone, so knowing how to

flatter your body shape in this most exposing of garments will help you feel more confident.  There are a number of ‘illusions’ you can employ to help your body look more slender and gorgeous.  So, whether you are heading to Bournemouth or Barbados this summer, here’s a few pointers to help you look drop dead gorgeous, based on your body shape.

Fuller figures
Choosing darker shades in a matt lycra fabric will work best for you – this will have a more flattering look than that created by shiny fabrics.  Many swimsuits also offer built-in tummy control too.
You could also consider a tankini as an alternative to a one-piece.  Higher cut legs will give the illusion of longer legs, especially if you carry weight around your hips.  A skirt or dress-style swimsuit with mini sarong is great for covering up a larger bottom.

Loud prints and very pale colours are best avoided.

Straight bodies
If you are slender you will have no worries wearing a bikini if that is your preference, but if you prefer a little more coverage, look for styles that have some interest around the waist to give you definition and the illusion of a narrower waist.  A shaped vertical panel with darker side inserts will give you a more shapely appearance.

Broad shoulders

Halter-neck styles and a plunging neckline will draw attention away from broad shoulders.
Strapless or square cut necklines will prove less flattering.

Small bust

By choosing a design which is darker at the bottom and lighter around the bust, you will balance out your smaller bust.  You can also try a pattern or some detail, such as a twisted bandeau style.  An underwired and padded top will give you a great shape.

Large bust

Built-in cups will help to give you great support.  Don’t choose anything with too plunging a neckline or a very low back as this will not offer you good support or shape.

If you want to find some great swimwear that gives you a better choice than the regular high street stores, you’ll find plenty online.

Some great websites to try are www.figleaves.com, (which also has a section on choosing suitable styles for different body shapes), www.landsend.co.uk have an excellent selection for petites and those with a longer body, as well as regular sizes and for those with a larger bust, you will find a good range at www.bravissimo.co.uk (you will also find them on the high street, just check their website for your nearest store).
Should you need a more specialist supplier of mastectomy swimwear, you can find a great range at www.nicholajane.com.

Once you’ve got your swimwear sorted, you just need to add a wide brimmed hat, some statement sunglasses and a co-ordinating sarong and you’re ready to rock the beach babe look.  Just don’t forget your sunscreen.

No matter where you are heading this summer, I hope you enjoy lots of sunshine and a relaxing break.

This Wardrobe Mantra really works

I’ve been working on an e-book, which I’ll be releasing shortly, all about taking back control of your wardrobe. As part of this process, I have suggested that you follow this simple mantra, both for clothes already in your wardrobe, as well as those you might choose to buy in the future. The mantra is three simple questions that will really make you think and help you to build a workable wardrobe.   When looking at a piece of clothing, ask yourself: Do I love it? Does it love me back? Do I have at least 3 items I can wear with it? I always advise my clients to try on before they buy, which will help to ensure that these questions can be answered honestly. So, let’s take each question in turn: Do I love it? To ensure that you feel great in everything you wear, and it’s important that you love every piece of clothing in your wardrobe. How many times have you heard yourself saying “ it will do” when you’re choosing something to put on or searchi...

Earning your stripes

Stripes are one of the regular trends for spring, and this year is no exception.  The Breton style top is a classic – the perfect spring look.  However, stripes can be notoriously difficult to wear- get it wrong and you could look and feel much larger than you really are.  But get it right and you could look fabulous, as well as bang on trend this spring.  With some clever tricks it is perfectly possible to wear stripes without looking as if you’ve piled on the pounds.  Follow my advice and you won’t go far wrong. As a general rule, vertical lines will appear to elongate your body, so if you are petite or have a fuller figure this can help you to look taller and slimmer.  Conversely, a horizontal stripe will appear to widen and shorten your body and is therefore more appropriate for taller, leaner bodies. Understanding your body shape will help you to determine how to wear stripes to get the best, most flattering, overall look.  I’ve set out h...
